Furry Glen Pond in Phoenix Park was known to be cursed. Dead ducks were found there every morning; some floating limp and lifeless in the water; others broken and twisted on the shore. Nobody knew what was killing the ducks, although many suspected it to be the work of the native fox population in the park. That is, until one morning, hundreds of duck carcasses were found on the pond, including species of duck unnative to the Irish wildlife scene; the park didn’t have nearly enough foxes to account for a slaughter of this magnitude. One summer day, young Ciara decided that she would get to the bottom of the mystery. She set out in a paddle boat toward the center of the pond, but as she approached, she heard a cacophony of strange noises similar to the screaming agonies of Hell. Suddenly, a swarm of ducks swooped out of the brush and surrounded her, foaming at their beaks and thrashing their malformed wings about wildly. The ducks were relentless, pecking and biting her until she slipped from the boat, splitting the back of her head open against the wood and falling into the water. She drowned as the bloodthirsty ducks continued their feast. The screaming died and the water ran red. The pond had claimed another victim.
